“Sustainability is a throw-around word.” An experienced product developer told me this recently. He didn’t mean it in a derogatory sense. In fact, sustainable packaging is an important part of his work. It’s just that he subscribes to a more precise view when defining sustainability as it relates to packaging.

In his mind, it is one aspect of many things happening at once. Reducing energy consumption in processes, down-gauging materials, redesigning packages to take up less space during storage and distribution, are critical measures in responsible environmental stewardship, to name but a few. However, his vision of a sustainable package is based solely on the amount of renewable materials used to make it.

Recent history demonstrates that attempts at package formats with high content of renewable materials either haven’t been fit for use or their cost was too high. So resin suppliers and packaging manufacturers continue pushing ahead to create formats that better balance performance and price versus traditional fossil-based materials. And the industry focuses on programs that take advantage of the more immediate and broader economic impact sustainability initiatives can have on business.

But, innovation is a dynamic force that won’t be constrained, and some perceptible developments are occurring in the area of sustainable packaging. There are some new materials available for testing in different formats like trays and thermoform roll stock, and they carry come some exciting performance claims.

To begin, these materials report to have up to 80 percent renewable content. That bio-based content is noted as starch, which can come from a number sources, including corn, cassava, and various grasses. The surprising claim, according to sources, is that these materials exhibit high gas barrier properties equal to, and in some cases superior to, conventional plastics. These properties are enabled by oxygen transmission rates up to 10 times better than the market norm, say those same sources.

If accurate, such functional performance could have some intriguing effects on extending the shelf life of fresh meats and cooked products. Now consider adding another bio-based component to this mix. Recently, it has been reported that sugarcane-derived polyethylene materials have been developed that perform like conventional PE just that their feedstock is renewable.

If these products all live up to their billing, there still is the specter of cost lurking about. The marketplace has yet to see a real balance of value delivered and affordable price. In this case sources say that the prices are competitive with conventional alternatives.

Does that mean the same price or something very close? I don’t know, but my product developer’s sustainable package seems to be shaping up quite well.

Is it easy to replenish the machine with blanks?

Customers are demanding more customization, so be sure you select a case packer that allows your operation to have the flexibility to meet the future demands of your customers.

6. Product control in case packing is of vital importance. The ability of a case packer to handle and manage infeed pressure is key. You may be able to feed 100 feet of product, but if the case packer can’t handle it, it’s bad line design. After primary packaging, secondary packaging can seem slow. Yet, incoming product speeds, linear speeds, and cycle velocities are high. Avoid accepting low- technology drives or actuators (air cylinders for example) without closely evaluating whether the lack of velocity and position control will cause efficiency issues. A simple air cylinder to tuck a case flap may seem adequate but as time wears on, does it perform the same or could its velocity and motion change, causing jams? If a machine does jam, can the actuator properly recover?

7. Re-consider case counts. Give thought to what kind of case counts will work best for the case packer and packaging line you are considering. For example, going from four cartons to five cartons in a case will slow output by 20%. That may be the difference between running well and not running well. Having said that, flexibility in case design necessitates a wide range of operational speeds. Again, customer requirements for differentiation in case counts must be considered for the future effectiveness of your purchase.

8. Consider glue versus tape. Tape seals the case against dust but does not necessarily hold the case square during transporting (especially during palletizing, on forklifts, etc.). Glue seals faster and makes a stronger case. Hot-melt seals very fast, needing little compression, but costs more than cold glue or tape and typically needs more maintenance. Cold glue has a superior bond with adequate compression time (which typically means a longer machine that costs more). Combination sealing can be used, such as hot/cold glue or glue/tape combinations.

Wood Pallets vs. Plastic Pallets

The most common type of pallet used for material handling is definitely the wood pallet; however, there are situations where a plastic pallet would be a better choice. Below are some things to consider when evaluating whether a wood pallet or a plastic pallet would be better for your business.

 

Pros and Cons of Wood Pallets

One of the largest benefits of wood pallets is that they cost less than plastic pallets. Also, they can be repaired, hold more weight than plastic, and are recyclable. The downside is that they splinter, hold moisture, could contain bugs, and use fasteners that could damage your shipments.

 

Pros and Cons of Plastic Pallets

Even though they are three times more expensive than wood pallets, plastic pallets are clean, moisture resistant, will not harbor bugs, are durable, and do not use fasteners that could damage your shipments. However, in addition to the extra expense, they cannot be repaired very easily, cannot hold as much weight as wood, and have fire safety ratings. They also are more difficult to recycle and harder on the environment.

 

When does it make sense to use plastic pallets?

Given the above pros and cons, it is easy to see why most people go with the wood pallet for their material handling needs. Do plastic pallets ever make sense? The answer is “yes.”

 

-          If your shipments weigh 1,500 pounds or less, then plastic pallets are an option.

-          If your business is set up as a closed-loop warehouse, it may make sense to use plastic pallets. The reason is that your pallets will be returned to you, and they are a great way to maintain consistent costs since they are so durable.

-          If you are not having your pallets returned to you, but would like to use plastic pallets (and have them returned), you can consider outside pallet management.

-          If you are shipping fragile items, plastic pallets are safer because they do not have fasteners that could puncture or otherwise damage your items.

-          If you are using your pallets as a store display (as commonly done in the electronics industry), it may be better to use a plastic pallet that displays nicely and is then returned.

-          If you are shipping fragile products, consider the risk of using a wood pallet. Would the extra cost of a plastic pallet be offset by decreased risk of damages, delays, and unhappy customers?

 

In addition to everything else, it is important to mention that you should not use plastic pallets when shipping internationally. There are code regulations that require wooden pallets, and you would not be getting your pallets back so the cost would not make sense.

Mullen and ECT testing

Corrugated Boxes and boards are normally given two separate types of tests to measure durability and strength. These tests are referred to as Edge Crush Test (ECT) and Mullen (burst) Test.

The ECT Test measures the top to bottom compression strength. These tests how strong the box will be when stacking other objects on top. The test measures how much weight can be applied before the box edge crushes.

On the other hand, a Mullen (or burst) test measures how much pressure the corrugated board that makes up the box can handle before it ruptures, or bursts. The Mullen test indicates how much load carrying capacity the board can handle.

Every box that has been tested either ECT or Mullen will have a stamp, normally on the bottom.

6 Ways to Save Space in Your Warehouse

Making sure your entire inventory, supplies, and equipment fits inside your warehouse can be a daunting task. Then making sure products are easily retrieved, put away, and accounted for and the process becomes much more complicated. We here at GTI Industries have created a few helpful tips to help you save space…

1. Over Aisle Storage – If space is limited already, adding beams across aisles and storing products above offers a lot more space for pallets.

2. Narrow Your Aisles - You can open up large amounts of space for more pallets by simply narrowing aisles. Switch from traditional sit-down equipment to newer stand-up equipment, which needs only 96” of width compared to 144-168” with sit-down. This equipment transition will aid the change in your warehouse while still allowing easy maneuverability.

3. Expand Up – Add extensions to existing uprights and purchase taller uprights when buying new frames to create more pallet space. Extensions are easily bolted onto uprights to provide as much space as desired.

4. Adjust Beams Levels and Change Pallet Profiles – Thorough inspection of pallet dimensions can allow you to adjust beam levels so that no more than 4-7” inches is wasted during pallet lift-off. Usually adjusting beam levels allows for at least one additional shelf level to be added.

5. Change Your Storage Medium – If you are currently using selective pallet racking, you may to a really consider your storage method. Warehouse products rarely move in and out at the same speed, and certain products move more quickly than other, meaning the same storage option is probably not best for everything. Some products are better stored on shelves, while others may be better suited with a drive-in or push-back option. Consider a vertical lift or a mezzanine to save both time and space in your warehouse. Products that move out of your warehouse quickly might be better off being stacked on the floor, eliminating the need for racking. Slow movers, seasonal products, multiple pallets per SKU items and things similar are a great place to start looking for storing alternatives.

6. Create or Update Your Slotting System - Slotting is the process of selecting storage locations for SKUs and is ideal for reducing order picking time, put-away time and eliminate warehouse congestion. Many vendors offer slotting software to aid in choosing and locating specific SKUs. This software also allows you to view picking velocity of specific SKUs so you can analyze product movement. Slotting is a great option to reduce picking and put-away time, helping a warehouse of any size run more efficiently.

The gusset is considered the depth of the bag.

Once you decided the type and size, you need to determine the Mil Strength. What exactly is Mil Strength? A “MIL” is one thousandth of an inch and measures the thickness of the bag. The higher the Mil strength, the more your bag can hold. Here’s a guideline for determining Mil strength.

1 Mil – Lightweight, great for temporary storage.

2 Mil – Most popular thickness, used for shipping light parts, clothing or protecting food.

3 Mil – Offers added protection, used for document storage, healthcare, restaurants, and kit manufacturers.

4 Mil – Offers heavier protection, used for items such as industrial parts and hardware.

6 Mil – Very strong, protects against punctures and tears, used for parts, gears and heavy metal objects.

Walmart's Great Value Bottle Redesign Yields Big Savings

Walmart concluded its 7th annual two-day Sustainable Packaging Exposition where more than 200 packaging suppliers showcased their latest innovations. [gallery orderby="title"]

But Walmart had one of its own innovations to share, according to the retailer’s Green Room blog. Walmart recently changed the shape of its Great Value cooking oil bottle, which eliminated 830,000 pounds of resin equal to the weight of 41,000 cast iron pans, demonstrating how “the shape of a bottle or box, can translate into a bigger environmental impact,” according to the blog.

Another recent win involved a deep collaboration between Sam’s Club and General Mills. Ultimately Cheerios packaging was change from one large box with two bags to two smaller boxes with one bag each, which yielded a 4 percent materials reduction.

“I’m often asked by Walmart associates, suppliers and materials manufacturers whether our packaging sustainability efforts are actually generating meaningful results,” Ron Sasine, senior director of packaging procurement at Walmart, wrong on the blog. “Each of these groups have different perspectives and aspirations behind this question, but after taking stock of what our suppliers have accomplished this past year, I can answer with a definitive ‘yes.’”

The real measure of success, he said, is whether Walmart meets its customers’ needs for products that use less material and energy, and promote recycling. “ On every measure, the achievements of the past year light up the scoreboard. Breakfast cereals in more efficient cartons, smaller shipper cases for imported footwear and resource-efficient lunch meat packaging are all examples of doing better with less, and every one of these projects helps drive our business.”

The retailer’s Sustainable Packaging Expo attracts hundreds of CPG and packaging suppliers, allowing Walmart and Sam’s Club buyers to visit their booths and get updates on new initiatives and ideas.

Sasine said he was particularly excited about this year’s event “because it comes at a time when our company’s leadership is reinvigorating and expanding our sustainability efforts. Soon, every buyer in our U.S. business will have sustainability goals. These goals will require buyers and suppliers to work together to identify, prioritize and execute projects that will drive additional efficiency improvements and cost savings.”
